Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program

Do I qualify?
If your household income is $54,000 or less, you are eligible for free income tax preparation through a VITA site. You can also prepare your own taxes for free online at

Who does my taxes?
Your taxes will be prepared by IRS-certified volunteers. Each return is screened by a Quality Reviewer on site to ensure accuracy.

Where do I go?
We have 13 tax sites located across the Greater Richmond and Petersburg region, with a variety of operating hours. Go to “Find A Tax Site” to find the location nearest you. Final hours for the 2017 tax season will be released soon.

What do I bring?
To have your taxes prepared at a VITA site, you must bring:

    • Photo identification
    • Your Social Security Card or ITIN card. Photocopies will not be accepted
    • Social security Cards for your spouse and dependents, if applicable
    • Forms for all income received in 2016, e.g. W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, 1099-Misc

Bring if these apply to you:
-Form 1095-A, B, or C (health insurance statements)
-Unemployment Compensation Form 1099-G
-Childcare provider name, address, and tax ID number
-A copy of last year’s state and federal returns (if available)
-All other tax related documents
-Bank account information for direct deposit of your refund
-If you are married filing jointly, both spouses must be present to sign the return
